The Olds Albertan has been informing, educating and entertaining readers with Olds and area news since 1993. The weekly newspaper, founded by publisher Murray Elliott, has grown and adapted over the years to reflect the changing dynamics of the community it serves, primarily Olds and the surrounding rural area.

Olds has a potent mix of urban amenities and opportunities in a rural setting less than an hour from Canada’s most dynamic big city, Calgary. The town serves as the professional, commercial, educational and innovation centre for the surrounding Mountain View County. With a population of 9,184 and a regional trading population of more than 40,000, Olds offers big-city infrastructure and facilities in a friendly, safe community. Where else can you find a one gigabyte fibre broadband connection, a livestock auction facility and an internationally-recognized college providing top-notch agricultural, science, business and trades programs geared to entrepreneurship and hands-on success in the competitive marketplace? If you are looking for a family-oriented community with progressive schools, first-class recreational, cultural and sports facilities, and the full range of retail and commercial businesses, Olds is the place.

The Olds Albertan keeps on top of developments in all of these areas and much more. It’s focus is hyper-local and coverage is centred on what matters to our readers: neighbourhood news, sports, schools and education, crime, economy, municipal council and of course, people.

While statistically Olds residents compare quite similarly to others across the province, it can be said they are in a league of their own when it comes to community spirit and volunteerism. Through no less than 16 service organizations, hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised year after year to support the health and well-being of fellow Olds and area residents. And the Olds Albertan is with them every step of the way, celebrating their achievements through articles and photos and in many cases lending a hand.

Staff are personally involved in a variety of non-profit and service ventures including Kiwanis, chamber of commerce and Rotary. We, at the Albertan are here to serve the ever-evolving community. The railway may have originally brought them here and the fertile farmland may have kept them here, but today, it is a diversified economy and population that continues to attract residents to Olds to live, work and play.

Since becoming a subsidiary of Great West Newspapers under the name Mountain View Publishing in 2005, the Olds Albertan continues to diversify with the community. Along with the weekly newspaper, the Olds Albertan uses Twitter, Facebook and its website to keep readers informed and up to date on community happenings.
